Pedestrian killed in Vreed-en-Hoop accident

Police are investigating an accident which occurred at about 1.30 am yesterday on New Road, Vreed-en-Hoop, West Coast Demerara and which resulted in the death of pedestrian Barrat Persaud.

 In a statement, the police said that the accident involved a hire car (registration #HD 3236) owned by Zaman Alladin and driven at the time by 45-year-old Jermaine Wallerson and pedestrian Barrat Persaud, a 50-year-old of no fixed place of abode.

Enquiries disclosed that the car was proceeding west along the southern side of New Road Vreed-en-Hoop when the driver alleged that the pedestrian, who was standing on the southern edge of the road, suddenly walked across (from north to south) into the path of his vehicle.

As a result, Persaud fell on the road and suffered inuries

The pedestrian was picked up in an unconscious condition by public-spirited persons, placed into the car (involved in the accident) and conveyed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor on duty.

A breathalyzer test was conducted on the driver, and no trace of alcohol was found on his breath. The driver is in custody assisting with the investigation.
