Long Creek accident victim recovering from injuries

Roseann Bumbury, one of the accident victims injured in a head-on collision on May 13 at Long Creek on the Soesdyke-Linden Highway, which took the lives of six persons, is still a patient at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) recovering from her injuries.

Bumbury is currently the only one among the injured that has not been discharged from the hospital. Her daughter, Bibi Ghanie, told the Stabroek News yesterday that her mother’s long-awaited surgery to repair a broken nose, foot, and hand, sustained in the accident was finally performed on Wednesday. She related that someone finally donated blood allowing the doctors to go ahead with the surgery and her mother is currently recovering in the female surgical ward of the GPH.

Ghanie noted that up to now, all her mother could remember is standing at the side of the road along with her husband and niece waiting to catch a car to go to Linden to spend sometime with her son. She added that she is thankful that her mother is alive today.

Bumbury lost her husband, Aubrey Ghanie, 67, of the Soesdyke-Linden Highway, who died in hospital two days after the horrific accident after being admitted with chest and lung injuries. He was the sixth fatality of the accident.

Meanwhile, Dexter Grannum, the father of another injured victim, Asher Grannum, of 179 Kwakwani Park, Berbice River, who was also hospitalized after the accident, told the Stabroek News that his son underwent surgery recently and was later discharged from hospital. So far, his son is recovering and has to attend the hospital’s clinic for frequent checkups. His son suffered from a broken jaw and bruises to his lungs.

The five who died on May 13 are: Graduate Senior Mistress of Kwakwani Primary School, Rushell Leacock-Jones; her 24-year-old brother, Rehum Leacock, also known as ‘Eddo’, of Kwakwani, the driver of one of the vehicles; Graduate Head of Department of Industrial Technology at the New Silvercity Secondary School, and the driver of the other vehicle Dwaylon Farrell; retired nurse, Urani Hall, and Clinton Patterson.

The other four occupants: Asher Grannum, Aubrey Ghanie, Roseann Bumbury and Ashana Ramsammy were admitted to the hospital with severe injuries. Bumbury’s granddaughter, Ashana Ramsammy, has since been discharged from hospital.
