The driver of a motor pickup fled the scene on Sunday night after he fatally struck a pedestrian along the Port Mourant, Coren-tyne Public Road.
Dead is Deonarine Bisram also known as ‘Rakesh’, a labourer, 30, of Rose Hall Town, Corentyne, Berbice.
Commander of Region Six, Shivpersaud Bacchus yesterday afternoon confirmed that two persons are in custody including the owner of the vehicle and a 17-year- old unlicensed female of Tain Settlement, Corentyne.
According to the police, the accident happened just about 9.30 pm along the John’s Public Road, Corentyne, and involved Motor Pick up, GNN 4363 owned by Aaron Abrahim of Lot 29 Block 4 ,Tain, Corentyne, Berbice which was being driven by a person whose name and address is yet to be ascertained and Bisram.
The police’s report said that the motor pickup was proceeding west along the southern side of John’s Public Road, Corentyne, Berbice at an allegedly fast rate while the pedestrian was heading east along the northern side of the road.
“It is alleged that the driver lost control of the vehicle and collided with the pedestrian, causing him to be flung west on the road surface, colliding with a bus shed on the northern side. The pick-up ended up in drain nearby, and the driver immediately fled the scene.”
The pedestrian was picked up in an unconscious state and taken to the Port Mourant Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The body is presently at Ramoo’s funeral home awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Bisram’s sister in law, Nandranie Baichan, 45, said that her husband and son were taking a drink on Sunday evening waiting on Bisram. They then received a call just around 10 pm from a relative informing them that Bisram had been involved in an accident.
“Me sister in law call me first and say Rakesh get knock down and then she call me back and say Rakesh dead and with the speed me come out and the man wah he used to work with me end up and go.”
According to the woman, she saw her brother in law’s body in the mortuary where she learnt that “he neck bruck, be foot bruck, he hand bruck and he hand get one cut.”
The woman is calling on the authorities to carry out a proper investigation and nab the driver as she is seeking justice for her brother in law. “That car man knock the bai and left am pon the road and the bai, nobody na pick am, nobody na do nothing, them lef am dead pon the road. Me want justice, me hold out for justice, them got to give me justice for me brother in law. He a one good bai, me na get problem with am.”
