A combination of high tides and rainfall is continuing to cause the water levels to rise in Rockstone Landing, Region 10, resulting in flooding in certain areas.

According to Toshao of Rockstone Landing, Flagan Carter, one household has been evacuated while another has taken refuge on higher ground.

Carter told Stabroek News (SN) last evening that the floodwaters have reached approximately one and a half feet in certain areas, and so far around 10 to 12 persons have been directly affected as a result.

“Some of the folks who are working there, they’ve also been instructed to remove from there as well. We’ve got to approximately one and a half feet of water in certain parts of the landing… approximately 10 to 12 persons are directly affected with water inundated under their buildings… currently it is raining as we speak and it [the water] is rising,” Carter said.

The Toshao further noted that the community has set up shelters for displaced residents, and authorities are working to provide essential support. Region 10 Chairman , Deron Adams told Stabroek News yesterday that, to ensure the safety and well-being of the affected residents, the Disaster Preparedness Committee (DPC) has been activated.

The DPC is a necessary agency under the Civil Defence Commission (CDC) and includes representatives from various organizations and agencies. According to Adams, the committee will set up shelters for those affected by the flood, should the need arise and authorities are working to prevent water-borne diseases and other issues.

Additionally, the committee will work to address the needs of farmers, provide water and sanitation services, and ensure that power is cut off to submerged areas.

Carter also noted that they are looking to install culverts to help assist the process. The government will also be consulted about installing culverts as well as backfilling works at the landing to prevent erosion.

The Toshao expressed gratitude for the support received from regional officials, including Adams and REO Dwight John, who have been instrumental in providing assistance. He emphasized that the community is grateful for the support received so far and hopes for continued assistance in the coming days.

In a statement, Adams emphasized the importance of activating the Disaster Preparedness Committee early to prevent chaos and ensure effective coordination of relief efforts. He noted that the committee will work closely with the CDC and National Relief Centre to ensure that all information and decisions are channeled through a single structure.
