Essequibo Zone set to debut tonight in Anna Regina

Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Championship

Following the confirmation of the teams and the appropriate regulations and structures, the inaugural edition of the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Essequibo Championship will kick off this evening at the Anna Regina Car Park Tarmac.

The event, which concludes tomorrow at the same venue, will comprise 14 teams competing in an elimination format for more than $600,000 in prizes.

According to tournament coordinator Mark Bradford, the response from the general public and the teams has been overwhelming, and that he anticipates a successful and well-supported championship given that it is making its debut in the area.

The competing teams are: Police A, Queenstown, Lakers, Gunners, Suddie, 007, All-Stars, Richmond Young Guns, Police B, Spartacus, GDF, Chelsea, Dartmouth, and Gold Star.

Upon the conclusion of the first round, the respective winners will advance to the quarterfinal segment. The best loser will also progress to the aforesaid round.

At the end of the quarterfinal section, the resulting winners will contest the semifinal segment, which will be staged tomorrow at the same venue. The championship encounter and the third-place playoff will also occur tomorrow.

The eventual winner of the event will pocket $300,000 and the championship trophy, while the second, third, and fourth-place finishers will pocket $200,000, $100,000, and $80,000 apiece and the respective trophy.

To date, the Georgetown, Berbice, and Linden zones have been completed, with the Bartica, East Coast Demerara, and West Demerara set to commence following the conclusion of the Essequibo leg.
