Ministry probing death of sluice operator

The Ministry of Labour’s Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Department has begun a probe into the  workplace fatality that occurred at the Springhall sluice located at Farm/Woodlands, West Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara (E.C.D).

Sluice operator,  Leevorn Stanford McGarrel, 54,  of High Dam, Mahaicony, ECD, and an employee of the Mahaica, Mahaicony, Abary-Agricultural Development Authority (MMA-ADA) died in the incident, according to a release from the ministry.

According to reports,  McGarrel left for work, where he was scheduled to arrive by 18:00 hrs on Wednesday, June 5, 2024.

“On Thursday, June 6, 2024, it was discovered that he had unfortunately met his demise while operating the sluice during his shift”, the release said.

Following these reports, OSH Officer with responsibility for East Coast Demerara,  Johana Vaughn, and the OSH Officer responsible for Region Five,  Babita Singh, along with  Shameer Mohammed, Supervisor of MMA/ADA, visited the site to conduct a preliminary investigation.
