Khan continues title defence with victory in Round 5

GCF National Chess Championships

Last evening, Candidate Master (CM) Taffin Khan continued his impressive run in the Guyana Chess Federation’s (GCF) 2024 National Championship, bolstering his chances of retaining his title.

CM Khan took on the talented Keron Sandiford and duly dispatched the challenger in their fifth round duel. With this victory adding to his previous three wins and a draw over the last weekend, Khan is sitting comfortably on top of the ranking table with 4.5 points.

Action in Round five of the GCF’s 2024 National Chess Championship, currently being staged at the National Racquet Centre.

Elsewhere, FIDE Master (FM) Anthony Drayton, who is second on the table, defeated Ethan Lee to move up to 3.5 points. Drayton who prior to the tournament looked to be Khan’s biggest threat, conceded a shock loss, got two wins and a draw in the first four rounds.

Meanwhile, third-placed Kyle Couchman racked up another big win, this time over Justino DaSilva while Roberto Neto and Loris Nathoo played to a draw. 

CM Ronuel Greenidge suffered a setback when he lost to youngster Sachin Pitamber.

The New GPC Inc-sponsored 2024 National Championship got off to a start last Saturday and continued on Sunday at the National Racquet Centre, Woolford Avenue, Georgetown. 

The remaining four rounds are slated to be played today and tomorrow at the same venue.
