North West man charged with dangerous driving death

Shane Rouse, a 23-year-old taxi driver from Hobo Hill, North West District, was on Friday charged with causing death by dangerous driving and driving an uncertified motor vehicle following a fatal accident on March 18 involving involving a pedestrian, Terensha Piere.

The accident occurred at around 15.30 hours on Philbert Pierre Avenue/Mabaruma Compound Public Road.

Pierre, a 10-year-old pupil of Hosororo Primary School, North West District, was medevac’d to Georgetown on March 19 for treatment at the Georgetown Public Hospital but succumbed to her injuries. The accident involved a car, PXX 7767, which was driven by Rouse at the time of the accident.

Rouse appeared via Zoom at the Mabaruma Magistrate’s Court on Friday before Magistrate Clive Nurse who read both charges to him.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge of causing death by dangerous driving and was granted bail in the sum of $350,000. However, he pled guilty to the charge of driving an uncertified motor vehicle and was fined $30,000.

The matter is scheduled for trial on August 19 .
