Chelsea, Ballers, Gunners and Henrietta United were among the teams to secure berths in the quarterfinal section when the maiden edition of the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Essequibo edition kicked off on Friday evening at the Anna Regina car park tarmac.

Witnessed by a mammoth crowd, Chelsea disarmed the Guyana Defence Force by a 2-0 score. K. Glasgow opened the scoring for the eventual victor in the second minute. The contest was then sealed five minutes later via an O. Warrick conversion.

On the other hand, Ballers squeaked past Dartmouth 1-0. Marvin Walcott recorded the only conversion of the contest, as he etched his name on the scorer’s sheet in the second minute with a strike from the right side of the field.

The Gunners riddled the Lakers 2-0. The contest was settled in the 18th minute as Hayla Haynes recorded a ‘Guinness Goal’ [a goal scored in the final three minutes of normal time] by stabbing his effort past the final defender to send the crowd into a frenzy. Likewise, Henrietta United assaulted Police B by a 2-0 scoreline. M. Rosario commenced the rout with a fifth effort from the right flank after receiving a left-sided pass. D. Romeo then sealed the eventual score as he slammed his effort past the final defender in the seventh minute.

Meanwhile, Suddie, All-Stars, and Henrietta also sealed their place in the final eight section following contrasting wins. Suddie overcame ETI 1-0. T. Brandon settled the outcome as he found the back of the net in the second minute.

Police A was then booted from the tournament following a 0-2 loss to Henrietta. Joel Haynes was the difference on the night, as he made his presence felt with a GG in the 18th minute.

All-Stars then sent a stern warning to the remaining competitors following a gritty 3-1 victory over the Young Guns.

Coordinator Mark Bradford stated that the response from the teams and communities highlighted that there is enthusiasm and an appetite for the tournament, noting that the event will only evolve and improve as it becomes a staple in the region.

He further stated that the format will grow as additional tournaments of this nature will naturally commence given the success of the inaugural edition.

The winner of the event will pocket $300,000 and the championship trophy. They will also earn the right to represent the zone at the national championship, which is slated to commence in August following the conclusion of the other editions.

Meanwhile, the second, third, and fourth-place finishers will pocket $200,000, $100,000, and $80,000, respectively, and the corresponding accolade.

Presently, the Georgetown, Berbice, and Linden legs have been completed, while the East Coast Demerara, Bartica, and West Demerara zones are pencilled to commence after the conclusion of the Essequibo edition.
