Guyana’s indigenous leaders meet with Toronto university students

The Amerindian People’s Association (APA) along with the National Toshaos Council (NTC) on Thursday met with students from the Toronto Metropolitan University to discuss the provision of social services to indigenous children and youth as well as compare child and youth services in Ontario, Canada to those offered in Guyana.

According to a press release posted on the APA’s Facebook page, the visitors were fourth-year students at the Canadian university conducting a comparative analysis of child and youth care services in Ontario, Canada, and Guyana as part of their internship programme. The initiative is a joint effort with Green Dupatta, a Toronto-based organization, and aims to gather comprehensive insights into the care services landscape in Guyana.

The APA said NTC was represented by its secretary, Toshao Shane Cornelius and Secretariat staff member Esther Marslowe.

The release said that during the meeting, the APA shared its observations and experiences regarding the service landscape in the regions where it operates, with personal stories shared by APA Secretariat staff who are also community members. The NTC representatives contributed their insights and observations based on their work. providing a broader understanding of their operations and areas of work.

The meeting concluded with a mutual commitment to explore potential areas for collaboration between Toronto Metropolitan University, the APA, and the NTC. The gathering took place at Cara Lodge Hotel.
