The police constable whose minibus burst into flames after he lost control of it and collided with a utility pole on the Wellington Public Road, West Coast Berbice, on May 27 died last Friday at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH).
Dead is Constable Dwight Chester, the driver and owner of minibus, BAF 3307. He was stationed at the Mahaicony Police Station and resided at Lot 12 Number Two Village, West Coast Berbice. The other occupants of the minibus were Cynthia Samaroo, 23, of Lot ‘A’ Yank Dam, D’Edward Village, West Coast Berbice; and Leroy Williams, 19, of Burma Road, Mahaicony.
Enquiries revealed that Chester was proceeding west along the Fort Wellington Public Road at a fast rate when he lost control of the bus and collided with a utility pole. Public-spirited persons extracted him from the mangled vehicle in an unconscious condition along with the occupants who were conscious at the time. Shortly thereafter, the minibus burst into flames.
The injured persons were transported to the Fort Wellington Public Hospital. Chester was treated for head injuries and transferred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital for further treatment. He was eventually transferred to the GPH. Samaroo was treated for lacerations about the body while Williams was treated for a fractured left arm and lacerations to the face; both were admitted to the Fort Wellington Public Hospital.
