A Palmyra Village man was yesterday found floating in a trench located not far from his home.

Dead is Ralph Appiah, 65, of Lot 97 Public Road, Palmyra Village, East Canje Berbice.

Appiah’s wife, Phoolmati Sooklall, 65, explained that her husband was in the habit of consuming alcohol and would wander the roadways.

She said that whenever residents would inform them that he was on the road they would hurriedly go and assist him to get home.

On Monday, she and Appiah were at a wake house after which he left around 8 pm heavily intoxicated.

She subsequently went home and noticed that her husband had not yet arrived home.

Around 7 am yesterday, Sooklall was at home when she received the news that her husband was seen in the canal, which is about 25 feet deep, located about 300 hundred feet from their home. After rushing over, she noticed that his body was face down in the canal. The body was clad in a red jersey and  blue short pants.

The police yesterday said that no foul play is suspected.

The body was taken to the New Amsterdam Regional Hospital and then transported to the Bailey’s Funeral Home awaiting a post-mortem examination.
