Dear Editor,
As it is everyday our roadways are plagued with: 1. New vehicles and 2. Accidents. This is evident on the roadways that most persons in Guyana probably only know or understand that the need to mash the ‘X’ without even acknowledging their vehicle has a braking system. Almost every day there’s an accident whether it’s in Georgetown or Berbice or even Essequibo. Now there are things to penalize drivers but I would leave that to the police force as well as our policymakers to implement new measures.
However, we can eliminate traffic build up and in some cases accidents by implementing an urban styled transit or transportation system. Many times traversing the East Coast corridor I have to be extremely cautious when I see those mini-buses driving on the parapet to undertake you, not only on the East Coast corridor but in the city itself. If we could implement a system that is in keeping with sustainable development we can have safer road ways.
For example, we can look at solar powered buses and phase out the mini-bus system that’s in place. In this regard we’d have actual bus stops for designated routes. Additionally, this can create employment and even bring in revenue for the state by having a card system where a person can top up their card on a monthly or weekly basis. Even if we cannot use solar powered buses we can look at trolley buses.
Sincerely,
