MVP Sports yesterday threw their financial support behind the inaugural Upper Mazaruni U-18 Football Championship, which is slated to commence on Sunday.
Tournament Coordinator Niel Henrito was on hand to receive the sponsorship package at the store’s Giftland Mall location at Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara.
Speaking at the handover, Henrito voiced his appreciation for the support, adding, “I am grateful for MVP’s sponsorship. I am really happy because it will go a long way in developing football, especially among the youths in the Upper Mazaruni.”
On the other hand, Selwyn Apple, a representative from MVP, reaffirmed the entity’s intention of supporting sports in the country.
He explained, “We are always pleased to support any form of sports, especially football. We will always continue to pledge our support for the overall development of sports in the country.”
MVP’s support is in the form of an undisclosed sum of cash and four footballs to be used during the tournament.
Paruima was the inaugural male winner of the tournament from among the six participating villages in the Upper Mazaruni District last year. Those villages, inclusive of Paruima, are Waramadong, Kamarang, Kako, Jawalla, and Phillipai.
While the inaugural edition of the tournament was played among male teams only, this year there will be both male and female teams from the various villages vying for top honours.
