Following the official weigh-in process yesterday at the National Gymnasium on Mandela, the Guyana Boxing Association’s (GBA) Novices Championship punches off this evening at 18:00hrs. The three-day event, which will resume tomorrow and conclude on Saturday at the same venue, will feature the participation of approximately 62 fighters from seven gyms.
The competing gyms are: the Forgotten Youth Foundation, the Guyana Defence Force, the Guyana Police Force, Pace and Power, Vergenoegen, New Amsterdam Academy, Andre ‘Six Head’ Lewis, the Guyana Police Force, and the Republicans.
The GBA Technical Director and administrator of the annual programme, Terrence Poole, stated that the weigh-in process was conducted without any hiccups and that a total of 62 boxers are registered to compete.
Poole further stated that he anticipates an exciting night of action as all the competing gyms are well prepared for the respective challenges, noting that this event has always been a favourite amongst the viewing public given the technical and rudimentary limitations of the fighters.
Meanwhile, GBA President Steve Ninvalle noted, “The Novices Championship is the starting point of what is a detailed and structured developmental process, a method that empirically has proven fruitful and successful given the nation’s continued elevation, ascendency, and dominance within the environs of the English-speaking community. I envision another successful event, of which the annual aim is the unearthing of talents that will continue the process of advancing the sport. This is where it all begins from a practical perspective in the pursuit of an amateur career, which, given the local and international developmental strides, is a lucrative and rewarding endeavour.”
He further said, “The GBA remains steadfast in its commitment to the sport and will continue to provide avenues for the development of all and sundry, starting from the experienced pugilists and officials to the emerging talents. This is our glimpse into the future.”
