Nets defeated fierce rival Sonics by a 71-59 score when the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association’s (GABA) Men’s U-23 League continued on Wednesday evening at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue.

Peter Langevine amassed a game-high 25 points in the win. He was supported by the duo of Shaquille Hescott and Joel Lackhan, who contributed 15 and 13 points apiece. For the loser, Kurvin Mars tallied 19 points, with Shemar Hope the next best scorer at 13 points. Adding nine points each were Marvin Mars and Carlyle Morris. The first stanza ended favourably for Nets who secured a 23-18 advantage. Sonics marginally reduced the deficit in the second stanza, netting 13 points while restricting Nets to 12 to enter the halftime interval trailing at 31-35.

However, it was in the third stanza that the Nets unit seized control of the contest, as they outscored the Sonics outfit 22-10 to enter the final stanza ahead at 57-41. The sizable lead that was realised in the third period proved to be the difference in the contest as Sonics outscored Nets 18-14 in the fourth quarter.

Meanwhile, the University of Guyana (UG) Trojans tamed Caimans 81-36. Jushawn Bailey led the rout with 24 points, while the combination of Shavil August and Leandre Abrams supported him with 15 points, respectively.

On the other side, Quiron Bourne netted 13 points, while S. Morris was the next-best scorer with 10 points. Chipping in with seven points was Timothy Kissoon. The conclusion of the opening stanza gave the impression of a competitive encounter following a 21-16 score in favour of the Trojans. However, the aforementioned assumption was quickly eradicated as the Trojans stormed to a 45-23 advantage at the conclusion of the second period after outscoring their opponent 24-7.

Trojans extended their advantage in the third period, netting 23 points while restricting Caimans to a mere six to enter the fourth stanza firmly in control at 68-29. The result was then sealed as the Trojans once again outhustled their foe, 13-7.

The event will continue tomorrow at the same venue.
