Eight Indian nationals have been handed over to the Surinamese officials after they were nabbed attempting to enter Guyana illegally yesterday during the wee hours at the Number 63 Beach, Corentyne.
Police last evening said that ranks on patrol at the Number 63 Beach just after midnight observed two motor cars, PAB 9258 and HD 26 which were heading north and stop suddenly.
“As a result, the ranks approached the two vehicles and observed each vehicle with four occupants and the driver, respectively. The occupants were taken to the Springlands Police Station.”
The occupants in the private car have been identified as Saurab, 22, unemployed of India, Rathee Sahil, 26, a farmer of Delhi, India, Rahul, 23, a farmer of Chandigarh, India and Sagar, 23, a farmer of Chandigarh, India.
According to the police, the driver of the hire car, a 43-year-old driver of Haslington, New Amsterdam, Berbice, was also taken to the Springlands Police Station with the occupants; Gurlall Singh Bajwa, 19, of Bareli, India, Hardeep Singh, 36, a farmer of Chandigarh, India, Baldev Singh, 23, a farmer of Dehradun, India and Gurjit Singh, 22, a farmer of Jalandhar, of India.
The police’s statement said that after checking their Republic of India passports, it was observed that the Indian nationals arrived in Suriname between the 18th May and the 27th May 2024, respectively, and entered Guyana without presenting themselves to the Guyana Immigration officer. “Hence, they were placed into custody. At about on 2024.06.14, about 12:30hrs.”
Subsequently, they were handed over to Immigration Department, who sent them back to Suriname “the country they last legally visited and subsequently entered Guyana by sea without the consent of an immigration officer.”
