Rallying around Guyana’s Olympic swimmer Raekwon Noel

Dear Editor,

All Guyanese should be proud of our new citizen who is making waves (excuse the pun) on the world’s stage. Raekwon Noel will be representing Guyana, his birthplace, at the Summer Olympics in Paris, starting in six weeks. He is a mere 18 years old and will be graduating from the Highland Regional High School in New Jersey, this week.

He and his family moved to that state in 2021 and Raekwon has been helping the school to shatter school records and win numerous conference titles. He is the first in the school’s history to qualify for the Olympics and he says he is chasing his dream with the intention of becoming one of the best swimmers in the world.

He started swimming at the age of four. He is tall and lean and glides through the water with ease. He feels in his comfort zone in the pool. His coach says that he is a cheerleader for his team and encourages them through words and taking photographs. He is proud to be representing his school and will do the same at the University of Indiana which he will soon be attending. He is also very proud to be representing Guyana at the Olympics.

We all need to rally around him and be his cheerleaders. Hopefully, the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports will contribute something significant to encourage Raekwon Noel and let him know that he has our admiration and support.

Sincerely,

Conrad Barrow
