The Guyana Power and Light Inc (GPL) said it has successfully installed deterrents and conductor shields on the line towers of the Turkish Power ship to prevent birds from causing blackouts.
This is according to GPL Zone 1 (Berbice) Manager Ravindra Jagnanan, who had explained that the company would be embarking on repairs which included taking out a transmission line and installing deterrents since they were “experiencing a high volume of birds”.
According to him, the same thing was occurring on some Guyana Telephone and Telegraph towers. He explained that vultures were flocking the lines in the mornings and evenings and when it rains resulting in trips in the line.
GPL, in a statement on Thursday, had said that maintenance on its transmission and distribution network in the Demerara-Berbice Interconnected System would include installing shields/deterrents on the L21 Transmission Line to address the proliferation of vultures on the transmission towers.
According to GPL, this initiative aims to reduce the frequency of transmission line trips caused by vultures coming into contact with network components on the towers. “Additionally, feeder maintenance will be carried out to ensure the distribution network is functioning efficiently.
These critical maintenance activities will necessitate de-energizing sections of the network including the L21 Transmission Line which connects GPL’s Onverwagt and Canefield Substations and the power ship at Everton, Berbice,” the release stated
