Guyanese fishermen held in Suriname

Two Guyanese fishermen were arrested by a mixed team of police and the national navy army in Suriname on Wednesday.

According to Waterkant, a Suriname media outlet, the lawmen signalled a green lacquered wooden SK fishing vessel with four crew members on the river around 5 am, which sailed from the direction of Gabadoe in Suriname.

The report said that the captain of the vessel was summoned to stop and an inspection was carried out. The vessel did not have a fishing licence among other requirements and was deemed to have entered Suriname illegally, the Waterkant News report said.

“The captain and the crew were conducted together with the fishing vessel to the mooring jetty of New Amsterdam, after which [the Guyanese duo], pending further investigation for guidance, were transferred to the base of the Maritime Police,” the report said.
