Miner set afire after accused of being in a relationship with another’s wife

Hours after he celebrated his birthday, a miner was early yesterday morning set afire by another, who found him sleeping in his Wenamu Backdam, Cuyuni River camp, and accused him of having a relationship with his wife.

According to a police press release, Valon Evans called ‘Doug’, 32, from the Essequibo Coast is now in a stable condition at the Wenamu Health Post which he visited after being set ablaze.

The release said that the suspect in the case is a Venezuelan known as  ‘Manuel’. The incident occurred at around 4 am yesterday.

Investigations revealed that around 20:00 hrs on Saturday, the victim left his camp and went to the landing, where he had a few drinks to celebrate his birthday. When the suspect returned to his camp early yesterday morning and found him sleeping, he became annoyed and accused the victim of having an affair with his reputed wife, the police said.

He then threw a flammable substance on the victim and set him alight, causing him to sustain injuries about his body.

The release said the suspect then escaped and the victim went to the health centre for medical treatment. The investigation continues.
