In what is becoming a familiar sight, the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) once again won the Best Overall Gym accolade when the Guyana Boxing Association’s (GBA) National Novices Championship concluded last evening at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue.

The army unit retained their title after accumulating 14 points at the conclusion of the three-day event, with the West Demerara outfit, the Vergenoegen Boxing Gym (VBG), finishing in the runner-up position on four points.

The other gyms that competed in the event were Pace and Power (P&P), the Guyana Police Force (GPF), Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF), Rose Hall Jammers (RHJ), Andrew Six Head’ Lewis (ALBG), and New Amsterdam Boxing Academy (NABA).

Omari Bentham of GDF defeated clubmate Shawn Cudjoe via referee stoppage at 2:33 in the first round of their cruiserweight battle. Similarly, GDF’s Jaqwan Milo defeated clubmate Larry Richmond via technical knockout at 2:59 in the first round after the latter abandoned the contest.

In the bantamweight section, Wavel Massiah of GDF defeated clubmate Zechariah Reddock via split decision, and Joel Hinds of VBG bested Nickel Witter of GDF via decision in their junior welterweight encounter.

In the Welterweight segment, VBG’s Zonoah Little edged GDF’s Shamar Sooklall via split decision, while Jamal Booker of GDF defeated clubmate Joshua Fiffee via walkover in a scheduled middleweight encounter.
