Horatio, Abrams storm to 200m Gold

The Athletics Association of Guyana’s (AAG) National Senior Championships came to an end yesterday at the National Track and Field Centre (NTFC), Edinburgh, West Coast Demerara.

When the dust had settled, Aliyah Abrams and Shemar Horatio had left the competition behind to cop the female and male 200m gold medals.

Abrams clocked 23.418s to just hold off second-placed Juvona Cornette, who had to settle for silver with 23.598s. Meanwhile, Keliza Smith took the bronze in 23.715s.

In the Men’s 200m, Horatio also had a narrow win, clocking 20.697s to upstage Noelex Holder, who came in behind in 20.740s. Clinching the final podium spot was Revon Williams, who was a distant third in 21.188s.

Meanwhile, the 800m saw Aaliyah Moore dominate the opposition, winning by a whopping 25+ seconds to claim the gold medal. She completed the race in 2 minutes, 05.38 seconds, while her nearest competitor, Alikla Blucher, came in for her silver medal in 2 minutes, 32.41 seconds. Taking the third spot was Marissa Thomas, who clocked 2 minutes, 35.10 seconds.

In the male 800m event, Nicholas Daw outshone his GDF teammate Devaun Barrington, stopping the clock at 1 minute 53.322s to claim the gold. Barrington clinched the silver in 1 minute 54.159s, with Kosi Thomas (1’55.034”) settling for bronze.

After resetting the Men’s 100m record on Saturday, Emmanuel Archibald turned his attention to the long jump pit, copping gold with a best leap of 7.77m. Lutalo Boyce was just behind with 7.56m, while Micaiah Washington (7.37 m) took bronze.

On the distaff side of the event, Analissa Redmond covered the best distance of 6.03m for gold, while silver and bronze were captured by Natrena Hooper (5.64m) and Shaneka Campbell (5.60m).

On the team side of things, the GDF athletes totaled 352 points to win the championship, while Police was just five points behind for second place with 347 points.

Meanwhile, the Running Braves were third with 59 points. Jermaine Simmons of the GDF accumulated 26 points to be adjudged the champion male athlete, while Stacy Wilson of the Police walked away with the female accolade with 22 points.
