-commits to footing bill for repairs

Pritipaul Singh Investments has committed to paying the costs for whatever repairs are needed to the Demerara Harbour Bridge after its vessel accidentally collided with it on June 4, Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill disclosed.

“Works are still ongoing but the company, Pritipaul Singh Investments has already committed to standing the costs. It includes the diving works, because they had to go down and repair the buoys that slipped at the bottom and we still have to do some alignment. So whatever the cost, they have committed,” Edghill told Stabroek News last Friday when asked for an update.

He added that by this  week, the total sum will be computed and he would be willing to provide that information.

On June 4, management of the Demerara Harbour Bridge Corporation had advised commuters that there was a minor accident involving two trawlers drifting and colliding with spans 26 and 27, which did not result in any major structural damage.

Edghill explained that one trawler drifted away and the captain and crew of the other went to assist but were themselves pulled in and collided with the bridge. Despite this mishap, traffic continued to flow in both directions on the bridge.

The most recent incident underlines the continued failure of the authorities to protect the bridge in the wake of similar occurrences, some of which have inflicted major damage.
