Nineteen-year-old Colwyn Nurse of Tucville Terrace, Georgetown, appeared before Chief Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday where he was charged with armed robbery.
It was alleged that on June 14 at Subryanville, while in the company of others and armed with a gun, he robbed Nicolas Jagnandan of one haversack valued $10,000, a pair of Ray-Ban sunglasses valued $10,000, and $20,000 cash.
It was also alleged that on June 14, at Blygezight Gardens, he robbed Brandon Fu at knife point of a Samsung cellphone valued $92,000 and $4,500 in cash.
Nurse pleaded not guilty to both charges.
The accused was represented by attorney-at-law, Eusi Anderson, who decried the treatment meted out to his client by police, given his age and presumption of innocence, especially highlighting the conditions he was held under.
Anderson complained to the magistrate that his client was held in custody for more than 72 hours which should be considered a gross violation of his client’s rights. Further, no knife or gun was recovered.
The prosecution however objected to bail, asking the magistrate to consider that the defendant used a firearm, and when one of the victims raised an alarm, the accused was caught by public- spirited persons. In addition, when Jagnandan visited the Alberttown police station, he saw the accused sitting on the prisoner’s bench and positively identified him.
The magistrate was also informed that Nurse in his caution statement, had admitted to both robberies.
Bail was refused and the accused was remanded to prison. His next scheduled court appearance will be on July 3.
