France-based Guyanese powerlifter Dominic Tyrell made his senior debut at the annual World Classic Open Powerlifting Championships yesterday and powered his way to a deadlift bronze medal and a sixth place overall finish in the 83kg category in Druskininkai, Lithuania.

Tyrell, who moved up from the Junior Category, where he had also bagged a deadlift bronze, albeit in the 74kg class, competed against 26 other athletes from the USA, Great Britain, France, Hungary, Canada, Italy, Peru, Denmark, Japan, Czechia, China, Belgium, Switzerland, Spain, Singapore, Qatar, Lebanon, Brazil, Malta, Cyprus, and Kuwait.

However, it was Great Britain’s Kengamu Jurins who took the overall title with a total of 845lbs (deadlift 350, squat 310, bench press 185). Jurins also took the silver in the deadlift, while Hungary’s Enahordin Asein took the gold with 367.5. Tyrell took bronze with a deadlift of 342.5.

He squatted the best weight of 265lbs, bench-pressed 167.5lbs, and deadlifted 342.5lbs for a total of 775lbs to finish sixth overall in the field.
