Kamarang and Waramadong secured their berths to the final in the men’s and women’s divisions, respectively, following semifinal victories yesterday in the 2nd edition of the Upper Mazaruni District Football Championship.
In the first men’s divisional semifinal fixture, Kamarang thumped Kako 3-0. Kelvin McAlmont opened the scoring with an 18th-minute conversion. He then doubled the team’s lead as he found the back of the net in the 40th minute. The score remained unchanged heading into the halftime interval.
The eventual scoreline was then sealed in the 56th minute as Milton George etched his name on the scorer’s sheet.
Likewise, Waramadong brushed aside Kako by the identical score-line on the distaff side. Esther Livan broke the deadlock as she made her presence felt in the 24th minute. The aforesaid proved to be the only conversion of the first half.
Upon the resumption of play, Damelese Brown extended Waramadong’s advantage as she slotted past the opposing goalkeeper in the 48th minute. The win was then sealed in the form of Edelsa Daniels, who found the back of the net in the 52nd minute.
The tournament, which was played in an initial group stage format, continues today with the remaining semifinal matches. In the women’s division, Kamarang will lock horns with Jawalla at 15:00hrs, while defending champion Paruima will face off against Waramadong in the men’s segment at 16:30hrs.
