Kwakwani maintained their undefeated streak in the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) Men’s U-23 Championship, defeating Pacesetters 103-88 last evening at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue.
Kelon Phillips amassed 36 points in the comfortable win, with the duo of Kimol Grimmond and Royan Shortt supporting with 27 and 24 points, respectively. For the loser, Neon Dover tallied 19 points, while Zardie DeJonge, Benkai Kings, and Kymanie Ballantine added 16, 14, and 13 points apiece. Racing off to a 24-14 lead at the end of the first period, Kwakwani increased their advantage in the second stanza, netting 27 points to their opponent’s 25 to enter the halftime interval in control at 51-39. Kwakwani’s lead grew in the third period, as they outscored Pacesetters 26-22 to enter the final period ahead at 77-61.
With a large lead at their disposal, Kwakwani secured the win as the final period ended 26-27 in favour of Pacesetters.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday at the same venue, the Kobras and the University of Guyana (UG) Trojans tallied comfortable wins.
Kobras defeated Caimans 78-65. Elijah David led the rout with 29 points, while Trevaughn Parris and Lorenzo Benn supported with 13 and 11 points, respectively. For the loser, S. Morris top scored with 16 points, while Timothy Kissoon and Quiron Bourne scored 11 and 10 points apiece.
Trailing 17-15 at the end of the first stanza, Caimans marginally reduced the deficit as they outscored Kobras 18-17 to enter the halftime interval behind 33-34. However, it proved to be a game of two halves, as Kobras seized control in the third stanza, netting 21 points while restricting Caimans to a mere 11 to enter the fourth stanza ahead at 55-44.
The result was then sealed in the fourth period as Kobras outhustled Caimans 23-21.
Similarly, UG Trojans downed Pacesetters 69-45. Jushawn Bailey top scored with 15 points, while Tariq Duncan and Daniel Benjamin scored 12 and 10 points, respectively. For the loser, Ballantine scored eight points.
A 10-6 advantage at the end of the first stanza for the Trojans was marginally increased in the second period, as they outscored their opponent 13-12 to enter the halftime interval in control at 23-18. The Trojans extended their advantage in the third period, scoring 24 points to their foe’s 20 to enter the fourth period in control at 47-38.
The contest was then sealed in the fourth period, as the Trojans outshot the Pacesetters unit by a mammoth 22-7 score.
