Asha Kissoon still refusing to relinquish seat in parliament

-no word yet from Speaker, GECOM

Over three months have passed since A New and United Guyana (ANUG) announced Dr Asha Kissoon’s refusal to relinquish her seat in parliament, and to date, there has been no word from the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) concerning the matter.

Kissoon has since refused to provide the media with a comment on her actions while letters of no-confidence and for her recall by list representative, Dr Gerald Forde, to both GECOM and Speaker of the Parliament Manzoor Nadir, have produced no responses. Forde has since penned another letter to GECOM Chairman Claudette Singh but again, has received no response to date.

The letter, dated June 4, 2024, states:

“Reference is made to your letter dated March 20, 2024, where you advised me that I will be appraised expeditiously of the outcome of the investigations into the head of the joinder list after it was found that new concerns were brought to your awareness. It has been over two months since I heeded to your request and am now writing for a follow-up on the question of my position as the Head of the List of the New Movement Party.

Thank you for your expeditious response.”

This newspaper has checked with GECOM on several occasions for an update and the response has remained the same; the matter is still on the agenda for statutory meetings. The commission’s statutory meetings are held every Tuesday afternoon.

On January 6 this year, ANUG introduced Althia King as its elected representative to Parliament.
