A fire of unknown origin destroyed a two-storey wooden and concrete structure belonging to Marlyn Fraser, also known as Baba, a 64-year-old self-employed woman of Lot 22 Weldaad Village, West Coast Berbice.

The police say that the incident occurred at approximately 4 yesterday afternoon.

Fraser occupied the structure, measuring approximately 40×40, with her six children and two grandchildren, ages six and four years.

The home engulfed in flames yesterday

According to a release from the police, Marlyn reported that she was at home with her two grandchildren in the lower flat of her house, feeding them, when she started to smell something burning. She immediately sent her granddaughter to check and she ran back to her, saying smoke was coming out from her mother’s bedroom.

Marlyn rushed out to the front yard and witnessed the structure engulfed in flames. Neighbours quickly gathered and formed bucket brigades to combat the fire.

Sub-Officer Quintin, Section Leader Crawford, and four ranks responded from the Onverwagt Fire Service with Fire Tender #90. They swiftly took action to extinguish the fire, but unfortunately, the structure had already suffered damage. The ambulance service and GPL also responded. Fortunately, no injury was reported.
