A new champion will be crowned in the boy’s division of the ExxonMobil U-14 Football Championship as Leonora eliminated holders Bartica on penalty kicks yesterday in the quarterfinal round at the Ministry of Education ground, Carifesta Avenue.
Leonora prevailed 4-1 to eliminate the defending champion after regulation time ended at 2-2. Prior to the aforesaid conclusion, Bartica stormed to a commanding 2-0 advantage following a double from Garfield Jones in the 10th and 18th minutes.
However, Leonora equalised in the form of Quincy Fraser and Johan Culley, who scored in the 23rd and 32nd minutes, respectively.
Meanwhile, the girl’s divisional champion, Waramuri, dismantled Charity 7-0 in their quarterfinal fixture. Erika Harris tallied a helmet trick in the 11th, 17th, 23rd, and 31st minutes, while Brentia Marks bagged a brace in the fourth and 37th minutes. Adding a goal in the 32nd minute was Shenesa Thomas.
In other results, Bartica thumped Marian Academy 7-1 in the girl’s pool. Nerismar Williams registered a hat-trick in the fourth, 17th, and 31st minutes, while Kelys Williams tallied a three-goal haul in the 11th, 30th, and 37th minutes. Supporting with a goal in the 16th minute was Vilerky Simon.
On target in the loss was Ashley Walton in the second minute.
Similarly, President’s College dismantled New Amsterdam 8-0. Nadinie Xavier recorded a hat-trick in the 26th, 30th, and 37th minutes, while Kimore Edwards amassed a brace in the eighth and 20th minutes. Adding goals in the 14th, 28th, and 36th minutes, respectively, were Reyanna Gounga, Teshana Abrams, and Jessica Henry.
The respective divisional winners will pocket $400,000 and the championship trophy, while the second, third, and fourth-placed teams will walk away with $200,000, $100,000, and $75,000, respectively, and the corresponding accolades.
On the individual side, individual prizes will be presented to the divisional Most Valuable Player awardees. The duo will also receive a year worth of education support in the form of school supplies. Similarly, accolades will also be awarded to the eventual highest goal scorer, best goalkeeper, and most disciplined team.
