The quiet community of Best Village, West Coast Demerara was rocked on Saturday by the murder of a 34-year-old fruits’ vendor. Anuradha Khatoon, known affectionately as “Mama”, was brutally stabbed by her reputed husband at their home, reportedly after she addressed his drinking habit.
According to a police press release, at around 11:30 pm the well-known mother of three of Lot 1 Best Village was at home when her 30-year-old husband, who is a fisherman, returned home after a heavy drinking spree. The two became involved in a heated argument after Khatoon reportedly appealed to her husband to “ease up on the alcohol drinking”, the release said.
It added that the dispute escalated, during which time the suspect armed himself with a knife and stabbed Khatoon once in the throat. She fell to the floor in the living room, and the suspect made his escape, police said.
According to the release, an alarm was raised by the couple’s 12-year-old son, who was awakened by his mother’s screams. Family members and the police responded and rushed Khatoon to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival, it added. Police found a kitchen knife on the floor.
Khatoon’s body was taken to Ezekiel Funeral Home to await a post-mortem examination.
As the news of Khatoon’s death spread, her relatives and friends took to social media to express shock and to lament the loss of the woman, whom they described as a beloved friend, great mom, loving daughter, and sweet sister.
“It’s really a sad situation to mention. Surely will be miss by all your love one… You didn’t had to leave like this,” the victim’s mother emotional Shashikala Lall posted.
Nevita Singh, a cousin, posted: “What a sad day for us we lose a beautiful hard working cuz. Mama y u had to go so young n left 3 beautiful kids… to monster that take your life your days r comein [coming]”.
Khatoon celebrated her eldest daughter’s 10th birthday in March.
Up to press time, the suspect was still at large.
