Man convicted of killing Faiyaz Narinedatt dies in prison

Convicted prisoner, Niron Yacoob from the Mazaruni prison was pronounced dead at about 2 am on Saturday June 22, 2024 at the Bartica Hospital.

Yacoob was one of several men convicted of the murder of Berbice carpenter Faiyaz Narinedatt in 2016.

Yacoob, 44, was at the time serving a 66-year jail term for the offence of murder. In a statement, the Guyana Prison Service said that he was suffering from several underlying medical conditions.

At about 12:26 Saturday morning, Yacoob complained of experiencing shortness of breath. He was immediately taken to the Infirmary where he was attended to by the medical officer and other ranks.

However, shortly after Yacoob became unresponsive and was taken to the Bartica Hospital under the supervision of the said medical officer.

The inmate was seen by the doctor on duty and was pronounced dead on arrival.

A post-mortem will be done to determine the cause of death. The Guyana Prison Service (GPS) has since notified the wife of the inmate, who it said acknowledged that she is fully aware of her husband’s underlying medical conditions.

The GPS extend its deepest condolences to the deceased’s family and friends.

Arrangements are in place for the body to be transported to Parika where it will be taken to the Memorial Gardens.
