Observations on newly constructed residential houses

Dear Editor,

In my last letter I wrote about housing deficiencies e.g., poor housing designs and construction practices, inexperienced /untrained building contractors and poorly constructed/unfinished houses. Here are a few of my observations on new residential constructions that I visited at the owner’s request for corrective advice.

1.    Windows constructed/installed out line (high and low).

2.    Hall, hallway and bedrooms’ floors constructed in three sections each one inch higher than the other creating a major trip hazard.

3.    Exterior steps constructed with irregular rise and run, rise varied from 3 inches to 9 inches. I tripped on the second step walking up.

4.    Interior doors opening smaller than the doors, thus installed doors cannot close.

5.    Interior steps are poorly constructed, occupants must stoop down to avoid hitting their head on the second floor. The steps were rebuilt by a second contractor who did worse, occupants had to creep instead of stooping to get to their second-floor bedrooms.

6.    Septic tank was constructed about 300 feet away from home on a mound and the contractor finished the construction without building any toilet/bathroom or space to accommodate toilet and bathroom.

7.    The septic tank was constructed without outlet pipe and soak-away/ discharge/ leach field. Thus, the septic tank effluents backed up into the home.

There are more but I need not highlight all here for this letter will never end. The above may be unbelievable to many folks but I did not make this up, it’s all factual.

Sincerely,

Hemwant Persaud
