The Guyana Mixed Martial Arts Federation (GMMAF) commenced their preparatory phase to select their roster for the impending Pan American Games on August 31st in Mexico.
This was disclosed in a release from the entity. According to the correspondence, the first training session was staged on Thursday at the Transport Sports Club and featured 27 competitors from various clubs under the umbrella of the local federation.
The release stated, “The rigorous fitness tests were led by Assistant Technical Director Charles Greaves and Coach John Campayne, encompassing a series of challenges, including combat sparring. Notably, Guyana’s Pan American Boxing Champion, Desmond Amsterdam, played a pivotal role by aiding in the boxing sections of the fitness test. Amsterdam’s distinguished career and expertise in the sport have brought significant value to the training sessions. Adding to the depth of expertise, Coach Clifton Barker from Boxing joined the team, bringing additional coaching support and enhancing the athletes’ preparation through focused boxing techniques and strategies.”
Trainers Troy Bobb and Andre Murray were also part of the sessions.
The release stated that the federation is focused on selecting a competitive team for the prestigious tournament, noting that the body has implemented a physiotherapy programme to ensure peak physical conditioning and the prevention of serious injuries among its athletes.
Meanwhile, Greaves said, “I am happy with the turnout and the good spirit and willingness of the athletes for their love of the sport and their readiness to participate. However, extra hard work is required to get the job done.”
