The Guyana Cycling Federation’s (GCF) National Championship pedalled off yesterday along the Linden/Soesdyke Highway amid heavy rainfall, with Alexander Leung and Robin Persaud among the category winners.
Despite the downpour, the cyclists in the Masters, Juniors, Juveniles, and Women’s categories engaged in competitive cycling despite the low turnout of 13 competitors.
KFC Evolution’s Robin Persaud bossed the U-50 category, making the trip from the Soesdyke Junction up the highway to Silver Hill and back to the point of origin in a time of two hours, 35 minutes, and 42 seconds, with Kaieteur Attack’s Kwame Ridley and Segun Hubbard clinching second and third, respectively.
Meanwhile, Alexander Leung was in a class of his own in the Junior category, clocking two hours, 34 minutes, and 33 seconds to seal another national title. Sidwell Sandy and Daniel Jaing trailed in Leung’s wake to occupy second and third in that exact order.
In the Juvenile category, Alex Newton literally had no competition, soloing to an uncontested title in two hours, 34 minutes, and 57 seconds.
Abigail Jeffrey, the lone female cyclist, had a similar time, clinching the women’s race uncontested as well.
On the other hand, Mark Spencer outdid Nigel London in the Masters O-50 category to earn bragging rights.
While the Masters U50 and Juniors went up the highway to Silver Hill before turning around, the Women and Juveniles Race turned around at the toll station along the highway.
The Elite Category will have their road race next Sunday (June 30), where the best road racer will be crowned National Champion.
