On Monday, US  Ambassador Nicole D. Theriot and Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony commissioned an oxygen plant in Lethem.

The US Embassy said in a release that it donated the plant’s oxygen generator, valued at US$165,000, to the Government of Guyana through SOUTHCOM’s Humanitarian Assistance Program.

“The U.S. Government is proud to have donated a total of three oxygen generators, valued at US$495,000, through the HAP program to hospitals in Lethem, Mahdia, and Mabaruma”, the release said.

Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony said “Apart from these generators saving many lives, they also serve as a cost saver to the Ministry of Health”.

According to a release from the Ministry of Health, he highlighted that the previous monthly cost of transporting and packaging oxygen from Linden to Lethem in Region Nine was 2 million dollars.

However, with the new generators manufacturing the oxygen locally, the Region has saved close to 100 million dollars.

Anthony extended gratitude to the US Government for their “close collaboration and substantial contributions to the development of Guyana’s healthcare sector”.
