National Junior Badminton Championships
Mishka Beharry did not disappoint last night as she claimed gold in the Girl’s U-17 and U-19 categories, while Frank Wadell and Xavio Alexander won the male U-19 and male U-17 titles respectively, when the National Junior Badminton Championship concluded last night at the National Gymnasium.
Beharry, one of the athletes that will represent the Golden Arrow Head at the Pam Am Games slated for July 15-19 in Mexico, defeated Malia Haley 21-4, 21-13 in the U-17 final. She then produced another sterling performance to overcome Leshaunte Berkley 21-6, 21-7 in the U-19 decider.
Meanwhile, Wadell downed Alexander 21-18, 21-15 to win the U-19 category. Alexander, who will don national colours at the Pam Am games, bested Ruel Rambirche 21-15, 18-21, 21-11 U-17 final.
In the Boy’s U-13 final, Ethan Bulkan dismissed Joel Rambirche 21-11, 21-8, while Anjaneysa Godette defeated Riyo Alexander 21-11, 21-7 in the Girl’s U-11 decider.
Also, Ruel Rambirche was victorious against Egan Bulkan 21-8, 21-6 in the Boy’s U-15 final, while Gabrielle Felix bested Harshini Muralidharan 17-21, 21-11, 21-9 for the Girl’s U-15 crown.
The Boy’s U-11 title was captured by Joel Rambirche who triumphed against Liam Brummell 21-14, 21-10.
Emelia Ramdhani, President of the Guyana Badminton Association, announced that Beharry and Alexander will be attending the XXXII Yonex Pan Am Junior Championships in Aguascalientes, Mexico July 13-15, 2024.
The tournament will be followed immediately by a Badminton Camp organised by the Badminton Pan American Confederation (BPAC). The camp will be held in Mexico and they will be accompanied by Nkosi Beaton who will be there for the coach’s experience.
Upcoming for the GBA will be the CAREBACO Junior Tournament in Aruba, August 22-25, 2024. Training will commence soon. There will also be a NSC Doubles Tournament which will start in the schools and will culminate in a tournament at the National Gymnasium. This is slated for October 2024.
