Coach of the Guyana women’s U-19 team that is currently preparing for the upcoming Cricket West Indies (CWI) Regional Women’s U-19 One-Day Championship, Clive Grimmond, has expressed confidence that the girls will be returning home with the title.
Grimmond said that the players are working feverishly to achieve glory in the tournament and added that the team is a balanced one.
The competition is set for July 2-14 in Trinidad and Tobago, with the hosts being the defending champions.
“We are fine-tuning our preparations, and the girls are ready to compete; last year Guyana did well, ending in second position, but this time we want to be the winner, and I am confident we will be the champion side,” Grimmond stated.
According to Grimmond, the current encampment period will expose any weaknesses in the side and will also give them an opportunity to gel prior to the competition. “The players are capable of holding their own in any given situation, and they have shown a lot of commitment so far,” he posited.
“I think our preparations are important, and we want to make sure we get everything right in Guyana before we head across to Trinidad and Tobago; obviously, every side will be coming out to win; our girls are determined for success, and that gives me great confidence as well,” Grimmond informed.
His relative, Realeanna Grimmond, has been appointed captain, and she will have Niya Latchman as her deputy.
Guyana will have the services of former West Indies player Tremayne Smartt as their manager.
The Guyana team reads: Realeanna Grimmond (Captain), Niya Latchman (Vice-Captain), Naomi Barkoye, Tilleya Madramootoo, Trisha Hardat, Laurene Williams, Denelle Lindee, Crystal Durant, Brianna Samaroo, Shonette Belgrave, Tiea Issacs, Danellie Manns, Tremaine Marks, and Latoya Williams.
