Defending champion and undefeated outfit, the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) solidified their position atop the standings of the KFC Elite League with a 5-0 thrashing of ninth-positioned Monedderlust last evening at the National Training Centre, Providence, East Bank Demerara.
It was the 11th victory for the army unit in 12 matches, as they rendered the contest uncompetitive following a 4-0 first-half advantage. Ryan Hackett commenced the rout as he found the back of the net in the eighth minute.
The advantage would increase two minutes later as Stephon McDonald etched his name on the scorer’s sheet. An own goal led to a further increase in the scoreline in the 17th minute. McDonald then made his presence felt once more in the 28th minute to complete his double and further strengthen his side’s grip on the contest.
Runnel Gordon sealed the eventual scoreline, as he converted in the 65th minute.
With the win, GDF climbs to 34 points, which is five clear of second-placed outfit Slingerz FC, who have a game in hand. On the other hand, it was the eighth defeat for the Berbice unit, as they remain in the penultimate position on nine points.
The tournament is scheduled to resume tomorrow at the same venue with another round of matches.
