Forty-one-year-old Sherwin Alexander, a security guard of Lot 1146 Cummings Park, ‘E’ Field, Sophia, Georgetown, appeared yesterday before Magistrate Faith McGusty, at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court where he was charged with two counts of possession of ammunition.

It was alleged that on June 22, at Plum Park, Sophia, he had in his possession, two live rounds of 9mm ammunition. It was also alleged that on the day in question, he had in his possession two live rounds of another calibre of ammunition.

Alexander pled not guilty to both charges.

The prosecutor objected to bail, citing that on the day in question, Detective Eastman had received information which prompted an investigation. He attended the aforementioned location and approached the accused, who attempted to run away. However, Eastman was able to apprehend him and conducted a search of his person. A licensed firearm was discovered in the front of his pants along with the four live rounds of ammunition. When the allegation was put to him, Alexander told the ranks that he had bought the ammunition for his own protection.

Attorney Jevon Cox, who represented Alexander, told the court that his client was performing security duties at the location when CID ranks approached him. Two other persons were with him, but they were not approached by police or searched. Another CID rank approached with the ammunition and told Alexander that he owned the rounds, which he denied. Cox also told the magistrate that the area was a public place and many others had access to it and that his client never admitted to having control of what was found.

Cox further asked that the magistrate disregard the firearm mentioned by the prosecutor since there was no charge for possession of a firearm. He also stated that his client never signed or gave any oral statement to the police.

Magistrate McGusty then asked the prosecutor if the one firearm used two different kinds of ammunition, to which he gave no response.

As a result, Alexander was granted bail in the sum of $100,000 for each charge, totalling $200,000, along with the condition that he report to the Prashad Nagar police outpost on the last Friday of every month.

The matter was adjourned to July 12.
