Vryheid man remanded over murder of D&I worker

A Vryheid, West Canje Berbice man was yesterday remanded to prison after he was charged with the murder of the drainage and irrigation worker whose battered body was discovered last week.

Ravi Henry, 26, of Vryheid Village, West Canje Berbice yesterday appeared at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court where the charge  of murder was read to him.

It was stated  that between Monday June 17 and Saturday June 22, at Vryheid Village, West Canje Berbice he murdered Dhanindranauth Surujanauth, 56.

He was not required to plead to the charge and was remanded to prison. He will return to court on August 2 for report.

Surujanauth’s decomposed body was found in swamp at West Canje Berbice last Saturday resulting in the police in Region Six launching an investigation.

Information revealed that Surujanauth left home at about 07.00 hours on June 17, to visit a friend but failed to return home. On June 19 at about 08.30 hours, his daughter, Amrita Mahadeo, made a missing person’s report for her father after conducting numerous searches for him without success.

According to the police, at about 11.45 hours on June 22, the Operations Room received an anonymous call informing of a body located in a swamp area at Vryheid Village, West Canje, Berbice.

Ranks attended the area in Vryheid Village at about 12.15 hours and discovered the body in stage three of decomposition, in a swamp with thick vegetation.

Commander of Region Six, Shivpersaud Bacchus, had said that they had placed the suspect in custody.

Stabroek News was told that the accused provided investigators with a confession which revealed that a conversation between the accused and the deceased escalated into an argument resulting in the accused allegedly using a piece of iron to strike Surujanauth multiple times.

Despite Surujanauth’s attempts to escape, the accused ran after him where he then allegedly continued the assault until the man eventually succumbed to the injuries.
