Omodelle ‘Dee’ George has been re-elected as President of the Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana (THAG) at its recently held 31st Annual General Meeting at the Guyana Marriott Hotel in Kingston, Georgetown.

This announcement was made in a THAG release on Friday where it was also stated that Eduardo Reple, General Manager of the Guyana Marriott, was reelected as Vice President, while Lorenzo Persaud, Business Development Manager at ANSA Rentals, was elected as Treasurer. Re-elected to the committee are Carla Vantull, General Manager of Wilderness Explorers; Abigail Ally, General Manager of Bimichi Eco Resort; and Victor Pires, Proprietor of Waikin Ranch. The newly elected committee member was Malcolm Rhodius, CEO of 592 Tours.

In her address to the gathering, George emphasised the board’s dedication to fulfilling its plans while providing support to members. George also touched on the following key initiatives.

1) Tourism policing – continued collaboration with the Guyana Police Force to ensure the safety and security of tourists. 2) Media representation – ensuring positive portrayals of Guyana in the media. 3) Capacity building – addressing the skills gap by integrating young people and providing internship opportunities in tourism companies. 4) Service standards – enhancing customer service, understanding of tourism products, and engagement strategies. 5) Licensing and HSSE [Health, Safety, Security and Environment] – focusing on health, safety, security, and environmental standards. 6) Cost of transfers – advocating and addressing the high costs of experiencing Guyana’s tourism products. 7) Diaspora engagement – collaborating with the Diaspora Unit to promote Guyana through various missions and holding monthly meetings with representatives.

THAG assured of its commitment to driving the tourism and hospitality sector forward, while ensuring its members receive the support and resources needed to excel, the release added.
