In a move to foster home ownership and stimulate construction, the Ministry of Housing and Water (MoHW), in collaboration with the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA), on Friday distributed 58 cement and steel vouchers worth $250,000 each to landowners in Region Two.

This initiative was part of an outreach event held at the Ministry’s branch office in Anna Regina. Minister of Housing and Water, Collin Croal, addressed the gathering at the Regional Housing Office and disclosed that some $14 million will be disbursed in the region.

This initiative was announced by President Irfaan Ali during the opening of the International Building Expo 2022. It aims to make homeownership more affordable and enhance the quality of life for Guyanese. Croal noted that it forms a key part of the government’s aggressive agenda to support housing development nationwide.

Speaking on the programme the minister said that over $319 million has been allocated across the country to assist homeowners. In Region Two alone, 125 individuals had previously received vouchers.

Meanwhile CH&PA Chief Executive Officer, Sherwyn Greaves, explain-ed that the outreach was organised to better understand the housing challenges faced by residents. He assured attendees that their concerns would be addressed during the event, adding that CH&PA has a lot of works ongoing in the region and they should expect more development works in the future.

Regional Vice Chairman Humace Oodit expressed gratitude to MoHW for its developmental efforts in the region. He noted that since an office has been allocated for the ministry in the region, it has significantly relieved the residents and he urged those present to make use of the opportunity.

One of the beneficiaries, Narisha Thomas, said she was very happy for the assistance and it will be a start for her. Other beneficiaries also expressed similar sentiments after receiving the subsidy. Many of them are landowners but were unable to start building.
