Yesterday,  SASOD Guyana held its annual pride walk in Georgetown which started off from the Burnham Basketball Court and ended at the Square of the Revolution.

Many persons from the LGBTQ+ community turned out to join the festivities and celebrate Pride Month 2024, and among them was the Minister within the Ministry of Housing and Water, Susan Rodrigues. She told the Sunday Stabroek  that she was out to show her support for those within the community.

Candace McEwan, founder and director of Guyana Trans United, said that representation is quite important as it is not only about LGBTQ rights but also women and children’s rights. She emphasised that her organisation does not only advocate for Trans persons. “Our main focus might be Trans but we really work across all vulnerable groups.”

A member of the LGBTQ community who goes by the name of Mercedes, shared what prides means to her. “It means you can be yourself [and] live life. We are not so discriminated against anymore and you know it’s been better; the gay community is opening more spaces, we are free to live life.”
