CM Greenidge closes in on Malta Chess Grand Prix

Candidate Master (CM) Ronuel Greenidge is now two steps closer to clinching the Guyana Chess Federation’s (GCF) Fourth Chess Grand Prix with wins in rounds five and six yesterday at the David Rose Special School, Thomas Lands.

Entering yesterday’s rounds with three wins and a draw for a total of 3.5 points, Greenidge had another stalemate, this time in his fifth round pairing with Loris Nathoo. However, Greenidge secured the full point in his round six defeat of Alek Ubaldo-Singh to stay top of the rankings after the day’s play with 5 points.

Meanwhile, Nathoo, who entered yesterday’s rounds in fourth place with 3 points, has now moved up to second overall with 4.5 points following his draw with Greenidge and a win over Ethan Lee.

The latter on the other hand, who had been in second place before yesterday’s play, has moved down to fourth place following the defeat at the hands of Nathoo. Lee is on 4 points, while Sachin Pitamber with 4.5 points occupies the third position on the table with 4.5 points, similar to Nathoo but with less tie-break points.

Greenidge will head into today’s action, facing Alexander Zhang in a seventh round match-up, while Nathoo and Pitamber will square off to determine the likely second place finisher.

The Grand Prix series is part of the Guyana Chess Federation’s (GCF) qualification system for the 45th Chess Olympiad in Budapest, Hungary, which will be hosted in September later this year.
