Outgoing leader Khemraj Ramjattan, in an address at the Alliance for Change’s (AFC) Eighth National Conference on Saturday, underscored the party’s relevance and its crucial role in Guyana’s political landscape. Addressing a jubilant audience of party members and supporters, Ramjattan hailed the milestone of the AFC’s eighth conference as a testament to the party’s unwavering commitment to democratic values.
“Colleagues all, members of our AFC family, I am extremely proud to be here standing to address you at this our Eighth National Conference… That we have managed to successfully reach an Eighth Conference since our launch in 2005, is evidence of a tremendous commitment and dedication to our cause. Congratulations to you all!” Ramjattan exclaimed, setting the tone for a reflective and impassioned speech.
Ramjattan reminisced on the AFC’s journey, highlighting its pivotal contributions to Guyana’s political landscape, including its role in forming coalitions that have challenged the dominance of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP). He emphasized the AFC’s mission to bridge ethnic divides in the country, noting the party’s ability to construct coalitions that represent a diverse, multi-ethnic society.
“While third parties like ours may not always secure government alone, they play a critical role in enhancing democracy by providing an alternative to the polarizing forces of the two dominant parties,” Ramjattan stated, adding that unity and inclusivity were essential components of the AFC’s strategy moving forward.
The AFC leader did not shy away from criticizing what he termed as the erosion of democratic norms under the current PPP-led administration. He lamented the concentration of power among a select few within the government, accusing them of manipulating institutions for personal gain and perpetuating inequality.
Ramjattan pointed to instances of alleged corruption and mismanagement, citing recent reports that highlighted financial improprieties and ethical lapses among PPP officials. He called for greater transparency and accountability in governance, warning of dire consequences for Guyana’s democratic future if current trends continue unchecked.
“In the face of these challenges, the AFC stands as a beacon of hope for a democratic and inclusive Guyana,” Ramjattan declared, rallying party members to uphold principles of good governance and the rule of law.
Sherod Duncan, outgoing General Secretary, delivered a poignant message outlining the challenges and strategic imperatives facing the AFC amidst a shifting political landscape in Guyana.
Duncan, reflecting on his tenure which began amidst the mandate of the National Conference in June 2022, emphasized the need for the AFC to “Reassess, to Recalibrate, and to Re-Align.” This period of introspection followed the 2020 General and Regional Elections, during which the party faced both successes and setbacks.
“Now … we are in transition and preparation. The party has maintained a steady course despite some resignations since that time and some members who simply left or assumed a low profile because of an emboldened People’s Progressive Party,” Duncan remarked.
He highlighted concerns over the equitable distribution of resources, particularly in the light of Guyana’s burgeoning oil sector. He criticized what he described as the PPP’s preferential treatment of its inner circle, noting a stark disparity in resource allocation that has exacerbated social and economic inequalities.
In his comprehensive report, Duncan outlined the AFC’s outreach efforts across all ten administrative regions, aimed at fortifying the party’s grassroots support and engaging with diverse communities. He underscored the importance of these initiatives in maintaining the AFC’s relevance and expanding its influence.
The General Secretary also emphasized the AFC’s commitment to transparency and accountability, citing the party’s active role in challenging the PPP’s governance practices through press conferences and public statements. He reaffirmed the AFC’s stance on electoral integrity, highlighting the decision not to contest local government elections due to concerns over electoral fraud.
Looking ahead, Duncan called for strategic cohesion and proactive engagement as the AFC prepares for the next phase of its political journey. He stressed the importance of strategic planning, recruitment, and leadership development in enhancing the party’s effectiveness and advocating for democratic principles in Guyana.
“As the AFC plans for the next two years, strategic coordination will be crucial in moving ahead. Such activities include disseminating information, recruiting new members and personnel, organizing our membership, choosing leaders, and developing a viable strategy to increase the AFC’s power and influence in Guyana’s direction,” Duncan affirmed, concluding with a call to action for party members to unite and advance the AFC’s mission. Catherine Hughes, concluding her tenure as Chair, delivered a message of pride and optimism for Guyana’s future, emphasizing unity as the cornerstone for progress.
Addressing party members, Hughes reflected on the challenges and achievements during her leadership, particularly navigating the complexities brought by the COVID-19 pandemic. “When I began this journey, we faced the formidable challenge of emerging from the COVID-19 pandemic. Together, we reengaged with our members, our groups, and the world, building strong alliances and promoting our vision for a fair and transparent electoral process in 2025,” Hughes stated.
Under her leadership, the AFC intensified its engagement both locally and internationally, advocating for constitutional reform and electoral integrity. Hughes highlighted meetings with key diplomats, including former US Ambassador Sarah-Ann Lynch and current Ambassador Nicole Theriot, as pivotal moments in advancing the party’s agenda on the global stage. The party’s efforts also extended to engaging with diplomatic communities from Canada, the EU, the UK, and the US, emphasizing Guyana’s commitment to democratic values and transparency in governance.
“As we approached our upcoming national conference, we have seen a remarkable surge of interest in our party from across Guyana. This renewed enthusiasm underscores our continued relevance as the only political party in our nation’s history to secure a significant presence at the parliamentary table alongside the two big players. It is a testament to our enduring commitment to the people of Guyana,” Hughes remarked, noting the AFC’s steadfast position in national politics. Urging unity among party members and citizens alike, Hughes emphasized the imperative of setting aside differences for the collective good. “Our strength is diminished by division, and it is imperative that we put aside our differences. Let us come together, not just as members of the AFC, but as dedicated citizens working for the betterment of our country,” Hughes appealed passionately. “Together, we can forge a path of progress and prosperity. Together, we can build a Guyana that stands tall on the world stage. Thank you for your unwavering support and dedication. The future is ours to shape, and we must seize it with unity and resolve.”
