Disparity in media coverage between the US and Chinese ambassadors to Guyana

Dear Editor,

I am writing to express my observation over the noticeable disparity in media coverage between the US and Chinese ambassadors to Guyana. It is hard to miss the effervescent presence of Nicole Theriot, the US ambassador, who frequently graces our local television news channels and appears regularly in our newspapers. Her active engagement and visible enthusiasm in various local activities are commendable and have made her a familiar figure to many Guyanese.

In stark contrast, Guo Haiyan, the Chinese ambassador, representing the second largest economy in the world and a long-standing friend of Guyana, is rarely covered by our local media. This discrepancy is puzzling and concerning. China has been a crucial partner to Guyana, contributing significantly to our development in various sectors. The lack of media presence, in my opinion, for the Chinese ambassador does not reflect the depth of our bilateral relations and does a disservice to this important diplomatic relationship.

It is crucial for our media to provide balanced coverage of all foreign ambassadors to ensure that the Guyanese public is well-informed about our international partnerships. Highlighting the contributions and engagements of all ambassadors equally would foster a more comprehensive understanding of our global interactions.

I urge our media houses to give due recognition to the Chinese ambassador and to ensure fair and balanced coverage of all diplomatic representatives in Guyana. Such an approach would honour our diverse international relationships and present a more accurate picture of our global engagements.

Sincerely,

Keith Bernard
