Briton John retains National Road Race title

Briton John once again proved that he is by far and away Guyana’s premier cyclist, retaining his Elite National Road Race title yesterday in fine style along the carriageways of Linden.
John made the loop from Amelia’s Ward to Silver Hill and back, repeating it four times for a total of 80 miles without much of a challenge from the 13 starters in the race.
In fact, under extremely hot conditions, of the 16 that started the race, only seven saw it out.
John of United We Stand Cycle Club did not have much competition, with Segun Hubbard and Kaieteur Attack’s Kwame Ridley coming in second and third positions in that exact order.
The Elite Road Race has now brought an end to the Guyana Cycling Federation’s (GCF) National Championships.
It began last weekend with the Masters, Juniors, Juveniles, and Women’s category races.
Last Sunday, KFC Evolution’s Robin Persaud won the U-50 category, making the trip from the Soesdyke Junction up the highway to Silver Hill and back to the point of origin in a time of two hours, 35 minutes, and 42 seconds, while Alexander Leung was in a class of his own in the Junior category, clocking 2 hours, 34 minutes, and 33 seconds to seal another national title.
In the Juvenile category, Alex Newton literally had no competition, soloing to an uncontested title in 2 hours, 34 minutes, and 57 seconds.
Abigail Jeffrey was the lone female cyclist, clinching the women’s race uncontested.
