Former Secretary of the Rice Producers Association of Guyana and PPP/C Parliamentarian, Dharamkumar Seeraj, has been tipped for the position of High Commissioner to India, sources close to the process say.

The position of High Commissioner to India became vacant in 2022, following then High Commissioner Charrandass Persaud being recalled one year after he had taken up the post, following his verbal abuse of Indian associate professor, Sonya Gosh.

One source informed that the Government of Guyana had nominated Seeraj and requested Agrément – the agreement by a state to accept and receive a proposed member of a diplomatic mission from another country – from India about six weeks ago and is awaiting the formal reply.

On his parliamentary biography, Seeraj is described as a “seasoned campaigner in the agriculture sector with specific focus on the rice industry.”  The Parliament of Guyana also informs that Seeraj has been a Member of Parliament since 2006.

A strong grass roots supporter and advocate of the principles of Cheddi Jagan, Seeraj is also seen by many party supporters as one of its ‘old guard’ members.
